چکیده

Heterogeneous Treatment Effects: Instrumental Variables without Monotonicity? A fundamental identification problem in program evaluation arises when idiosyncratic gains from participation and the treatment decision depend on each other. Imbens and Angrist (1994) were the first to exploit a monotonicity condition in order to identify an average treatment effect parameter using instrumental variables. More recently, Heckman and Vytlacil (1999) suggested estimation of a variety of treatment effect parameters using a local version of their approach. However, identification hinges on the same monotonicity assumption that is fundamentally untestable. We investigate the sensitivity of respective estimates to reasonable departures from monotonicity that are likely to be encountered in practice and relate it to properties of a structural parameter. One of our results is that the bias vanishes under a testable linearity condition. Our findings are illustrated in a Monte Carlo analysis. JEL Classification: C21

Instrumental Variable Estimation with a Stochastic Monotonicity Assumption

The instrumental variables (IV) method provides a way to estimate the causal effect of a treatment when there are unmeasured confounding variables. The method requires a valid IV, a variable that is independent of the unmeasured confounding variables and is associated with the treatment but which has no effect on the outcome beyond its effect on the treatment. An additional assumption often mad...

Treatment Effects With Censoring and Endogeneity

This paper develops a nonparametric approach to identification and estimation of treatment effects on censored outcomes when treatment may be endogenous and have arbitrarily heterogeneous effects. Identification is based on an instrumental variable that satisfies the exclusion and monotonicity conditions standard in the local average treatment effects framework. The paper proposes a censored qu...

Instrumental Variables for Binary Treatments with Heterogeneous Treatment Effects: A Simple Exposition

This note provides a simple exposition of what IV can and cannot estimate in a model with a binary treatment variable and heterogeneous treatment effects. It shows how linear IV is a misspecification of functional form and the reason why linear IV estimates for this model will always depend on the instrument used is because of this misspecification. It shows that if one can estimate the correct...

Instrumental Variables Methods with Heterogeneity and Mismeasured Instruments

We study the consequences of using an error-laden proxy W for instruments Z on the interpretation of Wald, local instrumental variables (LIV), and instrumental variables (IV) estimands in ordered discrete choice structural systems with heterogeneity. A proxy W need only satisfy an exclusion restriction and that the treatment and outcome are mean independent from W given Z. Unlike Z, W need not ...

Use of instrumental variables in the presence of heterogeneity and self-selection: An application in breast cancer patients

Instrumental variables methods (IV) are widely used in the health economics literature to adjust for hidden selection biases in observational studies when estimating treatment effects. Less attention has been paid in the applied literature to the proper use of instrumental variables if treatment effects are heterogeneous across subjects and individuals select treatments based on expected idiosy...
